Why Successful Mumpreneurs Cultivate Self-Care Every Day.

by | Feb 12, 2025 | Uncategorized

Balancing motherhood and running a business is challenging, but embracing self-care in daily life can transform the journey. A successful mumpreneur embodies balance and prioritises self-care. Alejandra Aranda of KidsLabMusic shines as an inspiring example.

What began as a necessity grew into a movement that helps children, parents, and teachers connect through music. Alejandra’s journey was not straightforward.

As a construction management professional, her years of work in the UAE education sector guided her to her passion: using music as a way for people to connect, express themselves, and manage their emotions.

She has found ways to balance her business and family life by setting boundaries and practising self-care. This has allowed her to build a vision where parents and children connect without distractions and enjoy music together. Her goal is to create a global platform for music-based education and connection. With her YouTube channel and her new book, “The Power of Music,” she is sharing her knowledge and experience with parents and educators around the world.

Her advice for aspiring mom entrepreneurs is to “Be kind to yourself.”

What inspired you to create Kidslabmusic?

Was there a pivotal moment in your life that sparked this idea?

Kidslabmusic was born from a mix of personal growing, passion, experience, and necessity. Until March 2020, I was teaching music in nurseries and private sessions in Dubai, but when COVID arrived, I had to stop working. At the same time, my husband got stuck in Saudi for seven months as airports were closed during the first period of the pandemic. I also saw many friends’ husbands losing their jobs, which made me realize how important it was to have a plan B to better support my husband. That’s when I decided to formalize my experience by studying for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE(i)).

My first degree was in Construction Management in 2005, and after moving to Dubai in 2008, all my experience had been in education. When I was studying for the certificate, I gained confidence in how much I knew about music and education and started shaping the idea of a business, something of my own, flexible and meaningful, that helps children and adults (parents and educators) connect with each other and with themselves through music. It was also a powerful period where I started working on myself.

My mental, emotional, and spiritual health. All of this together made Kidslabmusic a reality.

How has motherhood influenced your entrepreneurial journey?

Did being a mother shape your vision for the company? What were the biggest challenges you faced as a mumpreneur while building Kidslabmusic, and how did you overcome them?

Motherhood has shaped much of what I do. As a mom (and a teacher), I have learned how important it is to truly connect with our kids to understand their inner world, their needs, and to build better relationships with them.

I’ve seen firsthand how music can strengthen connections, help with emotional regulation, create more inclusive environments and bring joy into daily routines.

My own experience raising my children showed me how powerful music is in creating meaningful moments, which became the foundation of Kidslabmusic. The biggest challenge has been balancing everything, being present as a mom while growing a business. It’s not always easy.

I’ve had to work a lot on myself, my self esteem, and my boundaries. I also try to involve my kids in what I do.

They have helped me as photographers, recording videos for social media, designing my corporate T-shirt, and editing some reels. I truly believe that involving your kids in your business is a key part of the process.

What role has the UAE’s ecosystem—such as business hubs, free zones, or women’s entrepreneurship networks, like Mumpreneurs UAE—played in your success?

How did the association shape you in your entrepreneurial journey?

I have two words to describe how entrepreneurship networks like Mumpreneurs UAE have helped me: Inspiration and Admiration. When you find people doing the same as you, who empathize with you 100 percent, and especially women who probably have more experience than you, you want to hear their stories and take in all their advice and tips.

You also feel supported, you know you are not alone, and that support gives you the strength to keep going and not give up

How does Kidslabmusic help children connect with their inner world, and why do you believe this is important?

Music is more than just academic or entertainment. It is a tool for self-expression, emotional regulation, connection, and inclusion.

Through my music sessions, for example, kids and parents can explore their feelings and express themselves freely.

In a world that moves fast, having a safe space to connect with yourself and others is invaluable. When you connect with yourself is when you can truly connect with others, your parents, your kids, your students, your teacher.

And when I say “Connection”, I’m talking about a deep understanding of yourself and your surroundings. I have also created several resources: two ebooks (one free and one paid), released my first music album, and many more surprises are coming.

All in line with making music a more accessible tool for everyone.

What role do parents play in your music sessions, and how have you seen these sessions transform family connections?

Could you share a memorable story from one of your sessions that reaffirmed why you started this business?

Well, I want to clarify that the music sessions are just one part of the business, whose main goal is to use music as a tool of connection. So, the music sessions came from that goal in mind.

In my sessions, Parents play a huge role. Music is one of the easiest ways to bond with children, and when parents participate in my sessions, I encourage them to actively engage in the activities, singing, dancing, expressing and sharing joy with their kids.

Many parents use this space for bonding and self expression, and I could share many experiences about the beautiful moments we create in class.

Also the feedback that I have received inspired me to continue. But there are also parents who seem to stay disconnected, looking at their phones, expecting a lot from their children without fully engaging in the activities. And that is exactly the point! Because these are the parents who need connection the most.

They need to take off their masks to really express themselves, to be kids again, playing and enjoying the moment with their little ones. Connecting heart to heart. This is what inspires me the most to keep going, because I know there is still so much to do.

What does a typical day look like for you, juggling work, parenting, and self-care?

How do you find balance between running your business and being present for your family? Any tips for other mothers navigating this balance?

My days start early, preparing and dropping off my kids at school. Then I go to the gym, have breakfast, and start work, whether it’s preparing a class, creating content, planning projects, or handling admin tasks.

I also check my kids school emails or organize household things like groceries and bills. I believe balance isn’t about equal time for everything but about doing what makes sense and fulfills us.

If we feel good in all areas of life, that’s balance, even if we spend 20 hours on one and 5 minutes on another.

What helps me most is eating healthy, sleeping early, meditating at least twice a week, and using my planner to organize absolutely everything. The most meaningful time with my kids is at night, as we have our best conversations before bed.

My advice to other moms: automate or delegate anything that’s not a priority for your family or personal and professional growth (online groceries, automatic payments, meal planning, household help, etc.), have an accountant for your business, and most importantly: be kind to yourself!

What were some of the fears or doubts you had when starting Kidslabmusic, and how did you overcome them?

What lessons did you learn about resilience, adaptability, and creativity from your entrepreneurial journey?

At the beginning, my biggest fear was not being able to manage everything. I felt overwhelmed thinking about all the things I needed to do to run a business, and I also felt lost about how to start.

I’ve learned that the best way to start is by using what you already have. I’ve also learned that clarity comes from action, as I didn’t have all the answers when I started, but by taking small steps, I figured things out along the way.

How do you balance providing a meaningful service while meeting the financial and legal obligations of running a business in the UAE?

There are two things that have saved my life with this: my accountant (he is an external provider), who does all my business accounting, and my first degree as a Construction Manager, as I learned how to do a cash flow at that time.

When you have that clarity, you know exactly how much you need to have in your bank account every month to pay all your expenses.

What is your ultimate vision for Kidslabmusic? Where do you see it in 5 or 10 years?

I see Kidslabmusic growing into a global platform where parents, educators, and children can access high-

quality, engaging music resources. I also want to create more opportunities for children, parents and schools to experience the power of music, whether through online programs, live sessions, workshops, books, learning or teaching material, etc.

Tell us about your book launch, ‘The Power of Music’—what is the inspiration? What is the book about? How can people get it?

“The Power of Music” is an ebook that shows parents and educators how they can use music intentionally in daily life.

The ebook contains anecdotes and experiences from my life as a mother and teacher, as well as including several authors and their studies to understand how we can use music as a powerful tool that helps us connect, regulate, motivate, foster creativity, promote inclusion, and enhance our daily routines. It’s available on my website, and on Amazon Kindle in case somebody is interested.
